At the end of the Spring bank holiday week, the Youth from EYFA and our Welsh counterparts WSTAA, met up again for the annual rivers Festival at Tregaron in west Wales.
Over 30 youth members joined in the fun, many to experience river fishing for the first time. Armed with a new set of skills, everyone caught fish, lots of fish!
After a fly-tying session and comp on the Friday night, we gathered on the River Teifi to hone our skills. Coaches from both countries helped develop the skills and knowledge around nymphing and dry fly techniques, as well as river-craft, catch and release techniques and an examination of the rivers bug life.
It was fantastic to see members of the medal winning 2007 World Team help coach, mentor and inspire the new recruits.
After a quick picnic lunch, it was off to the guided fishing trips along the river. The weather was bright and the conditions challenging, however everyone caught fish! The day ended with a pig roast BBQ and tackle auction.
On Sunday, while some of the Loch-style team headed off to the mountains to fish for the wild brown trout of Teifi pools in preparation for their trip to Ireland, the rest of the group headed back to the river. With overcast conditions the Teifi river trout were hungry for more action. All the fish were carefully returned to the river.
We can’t thank Cymdeithas Pysgota Tregaron Angling Association enough for the hospitality - it is a truly amazing experience. The event just gets better and better every year.
Thanks also to the Coaches; Guides; Snowbee - for their kind donation; and all the participants for making it such a memorable event.
We hope to see all the England Youth at the Rivers final on the 7th September at Bolton Abbey – follow this link for more details.
