5th International Youth Rivers Festival

Image

English and Welsh Youth joined together in Tregaron for the 5th International Youth Rivers Festival at the beginning of June. The weekend event introduced many youth anglers to rivers, the habitats and wildlife they support the techniques and skills to catch fish and most importantly in a safe and friendly environment. At the beginning of June the River Teifi was in perfect condition. Rain two weeks earlier had replenished flows and judicious stocking by Cymdeithas Pysgota Tregaron Angling Association in partnership with the Environment Agency meant there were plenty of fish to tempt with the fly.

This was the Fifth International Youth Rivers Festival hosted by Tregaron with EYFA and our Welsh counter parts. Our headquarters was the Talbot Hotel where we tied flies, made preparations and held the Buffet and BBQ. After the introductions and fly tying on Friday night it was down to the serious business of catching fish. It was pleasing to note that this year two of the World team helped out on the coaching.

Lisa Isles (Captain) and Scott Nellins the 2005 Captain and current Rivers Champion, joined the senior coaches to share their knowledge and skills they've learnt over the past five years both at Tregaron and around Europe at the last two world Championships. Later this summer they will be heading England's attack in the USA at the World championships in Pennsylvania. Just five years ago neither had really fished a rover before joining EYFA.

After the morning's skill sessions, it was time for the guided river sessions and putting the newly acquired skills and techniques in to practice. Everyone caught fish! Some had over 25 measurable fish (Fish over 20cm!). Truly spectacular fishing, probably the best we have had in five years. Small dry flies size 16 and 18 black F-fly did the damage but also small nymphs and the occasional streamer scored well. Following Saturdays social evening we returned to the river on Sunday morning to find the fish just as responsive as the day before. We left the river with thoughts of clear rivers beautiful Welsh hills and spectacular fishing….

We must thank CPTAA for their generous hospitality without them this event just wouldn't happen. The Talbot Hotel, donations by the Environment Agency, Orvis, Scierra, Lureflash and many others that gave up time to make our stay so welcome.
