The England Youth National was held at Grafham Water on Sunday 12 July 2009. After two weeks of very difficult fishing, conditions were going to be challenging for the competitors aged between 12 and 18. Each pairing was accompanied by an experienced boatman, with the top ten anglers plus reserves going through to represent England at the Youth International to be held in England on Wednesday 28 July 2010.
The field of 22 entrants contained some very experienced loch-style anglers including current team captain and previous National Champion Josh Fenton, Matthew Holdroyd who has held a team place since 2006 and World Youth team members Matthew Kidd and Carl Malpass. So the competition for places in the 2010 England Youth Team was bound to be strong.
Match day conditions were good with the wind swinging round to the west allowing the boats long drifts straight down the reservoir. As the day progressed it became obvious that Grafham was fishing better than it had for some considerable time, and this was borne out by three of the competitors catching their limit.
Josh Fenton, the 2009 Loch-style Team Captain won his second National title to add to the title he first won in 2006, with Matthew Kidd in second place and newcomer Ashley Gillies - who had enjoyed fishing the two development days run by the EYFA in April and June - in third place. All the top three anglers having caught their limit of 8 fish.
